As part of Melbourne Airport's planning for the third runway, several studies have been undertaken to identify any potential impacts on landscape, flora and fauna, soil, groundwater, waterways, waste, air quality and heritage areas around the airport.
Potential environmental impacts have been identified and measured using the concept design for construction and operation of the third runway. Studies covered the third runway footprint and its immediate surrounds.
Melbourne Airport has planned a series of measures to avoid, mitigate and manage adverse impacts on the whole of the environment for both the construction and operation of the third runway. These meet the airport’s environmental obligations under theAirports Act 1996and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999(EPBC Act).
